In my early years we mainly sang songs in children’s church as filler to eat up the long services that where happening in big church. The songs didn’t have much substance, I’m still trying to understand what “Climb, Climb Up Sonshine Mountain” even means let alone what it has to do with the five Biblical benefits of training and developing children as worshippers.
There were no words so the kids could enter in they either knew the song and got to sing or just watched the others sing. Then we added the flip chart with hand written words that was replaced by overhead projectors and overhead transparencies. At lease now the kids were learning the words but what where they learning about worship? What where they learning that was helping them lay a foundation for a lifetime as a worshipper? I’ve always felt that the best description of what we are called to become as Children’s ministers is a foundation specialist. If this is true for children’s ministers then children’s praise and worship leaders should lay the foundation for worship that can be built upon as children grow and mature in their quest to follow Christ.

Re: Kid's Worship Innovation Then & Now- part 2

Kids love to sing fun songs, but fun songs need to be distinguished from worship songs. I have caught some flack for not singing the traditional kids' church songs during the kids' worship time. It has been a process to make that distinction with the kids and with the adults. Good stuff brother Jim. Keep 'em coming.
