What do you do as the coach of a children’s ministry team to turn dysfunction back into function? Here’s what I do:
1. Do away with wrong thinking. When a team thinks like individuals rather than a unit the actions fall below the desired outcome. A team player realizes what’s best for the team is also what’s best for them as an individual.
No one likes to be on a team with a ball hog. A ball hog thinks only about one thing, themselves. A team player puts the goals, needs and good of the team first rather than individual goals, wants, and needs. We’ve all heard it, but it’s true there is no I in team. Listen for me and mine statements confront and correct! These statements are indicators of wrong thinking that will lead to wrong actions. The common goal is of more value to a functional team. As a coach it’s my job to be on the lookout for selfishness. When any team member doesn’t value the team you are headed toward dysfunction. Always be on the lookout for team members who respect and esteem each member of the team and encourage and reward these actions. If respect and esteem is lacking deal with it.

Re: Team Dysfunction Rather Than Function-2

I have enjoyed reading Woodens ways and philosophies on coaching and turning around teams. I would recommend any of his books to assist in this topic as well.

Nice post.
