The most important thing we can be to the people and companies we serve is a problem solver. Problem Solvers are always in demand. I realized years ago I was more valuable to my pastor and the organization as a problem-solving leader to leaders than a teacher of kids. Today in all I do I find myself using this skill more than ever. So with that quest of becoming a master of solving problems in mind here are 10 steps to take to become a problem solver...
1. Identify the problem. Ask some questions like: What’s wrong? Why is it a problem? I've found that sometimes the problem is several problems
2. Why did this happen? Do some digging, evaluate, and investigate.
3. List as many different ways as possible to solve the problem. There is usually more than one answer. Examine each possible answer to determine which is the best solution. What does the Word say?
4. What factors are involved that make this the absolute best solution? Like; Cost (Budget, quality, quantity, you can only have two.) Effort, etc. Ask yourself is this a definite solution or is it a band-aid?
5. Historically how has this situation been handled and why? (Experience is the best teacher, but it doesn’t have to be your experiences!) Look within your organization as well as what do others do, in your city, In your area, and around the country. With the web we can now look around the world!
6. Does your solution set a precedent? if it does find, just make sure you're willing to live with your decision.
7. Once you think you know the answer ask one more time, "Is this truly the best way to do this?" Seek the advice of others, brainstorm, consider every angle or take a look at this solution from another person’s perspective.
8. Do you have a peace about the solution? (Don’t override any checks in your Spirit!) Always follow peace!
9. Now it's time to develop a strategy to put your solution into practice. Two things I know: Planning must always go before action and people follow people with a plan. There is a difference between an idea and a well thought out plan!
10. Communicate the strategy and work your plan (Add feet)
